So one of my best friends,Makenzie, wrote a really good story, and gave me her permission to post it here. Please tell her what you think.
WARNING: DONT READ IF YOU HAVENT READ THE HUNGER GAMES!!!
This is told from Cloves point of view.
The Real Star Crossed Lovers
There were those small moments in life when you get really excited but then you realise it can be a bad thing. This was one of those moments.
“A feast.” I said. Cato nodded.
This could be good. We could have a chance to kill more tributes. Who was left again? Lover boy, Katniss, Thresh… that redhead from 5. If we manage to kill any of them… we could have a chance at winning.
But this could be bad. One of us, or both of us, could die. Thresh, lover boy, and Katniss were the only ones that seemed like they would kill us. That redhead, as far as I knew, avoided all the other tributes. No problem with her.
There was also the fact that Peeta was probably gravely injured. So that leaves Katniss and Thresh as the main threats.
But we had another night to plan this.
In the morning we packed all our supplies up and hid them in a bush. Then we got our choice weapons, I had all my knifes and Cato had his sword and a spear.
“So who’s left anyway?” Cato asked.
“4 tributes, not including us. We really only need to worry about Thresh or Katniss. Peeta shouldn’t be in a fighting condition and that district 5 girl…” I trailed off.
“She’s not the killer or fighter type.” Cato finished.
Our plan was simple. He stayed hidden in the forest, covering me. I go into the Cornucopia to get our stuff. Should be easy.
Sitting behind some bushed, a few feet away from Cato. The second the backpacks were up, I was about to run for the one marked “2″ when I saw district 5 dart out of the woods, snatch up her backpack and scurry away. Clever girl.
I saw Katniss run for her backpack. I smiled to myself, chasing after her. I brought a knife to her back. She spun around to face me, looking scared like a bunny before you killed it. A dirty, overgrown bunny.
“How’s your lover boy?” I asked tauntingly.
“Peeta? Oh he’s fine. In fact, he’s probably killing your partner now.” She said this pleasantly, but with fear in her voice. Almost not noticeable.
“Admit it. He’s dying. And whatever is in that bag,” I snatched the bag from her, the straps splitting from the minuscule bag. ”Is the only thing that can save him.” I grinned at her.
“He’s going to die. Painfully and slowly. Just like district 11. What was her name? Ruby?”
I heard a low yell of outrage, and for a wild moment I thought it was from the girl I had at knife point.
Then I was pinned to the side of the Cornucopia by none other than Thresh.
“You killed Rue?”
But before I could finish it, a cannon blasted and Thresh was dead. He had a familiar looking spear in his back.
Before I could get back to Katniss, she was gone with her little backpack. I quickly grabbed my bag, as well as 11′s. Not like they needed it anymore.
“Brilliant. One down, 3 to go.”
“And we got the 11 backpack.” I said, grinning. Upon opening the 11 pack, we found it contained a sort of kit. There was fresh Capitol food. Turkey, sauce, and other small samplings of their finest meals. There was also animal poison. Snakes were apparently a problem in the field.
Our backpack contained full body armour for both of us. “This is brilliant.” I said. 12 won’t be able to touch us.”
“Unless they go for our heads.” Cato said grimly.
It was true. The body armour had the one small defect of not covering our faces.
I woke up this morning to a cannon blast. Another tribute down.
“Hopefully it was Katniss.”
“Lover boy is not as much of a threat.” said Cato.
“Or maybe it was 5.”
“I can’t see 12 killing her.”
I couldn’t either. I can’t imagine them killing anyone other than that girl from 8 Peeta took down or Marvel.
We could win this.
By nightfall I knew something was to happen. Neither of the other two, whoever they were, had made any appearance, and the mockingjays hadn’t made a sound for about 5 minutes.
A low growl of a very large sounding dog made us spring to our feet, wearing full body armour under our clothes and holding our best weapons. Out of almost nothing, a beast popped out of the forest. I didn’t even look as I sprinted toward the Cornucopia.
I was vaguely aware of 12 running to the same location.
Cato gave me a leg up and soon we were both on the Cornucopia. Katniss was trying to pull lover boy up. I heard a strangled yell from him, a beast had gotten him. She finally pulled him up, his leg was hurt.
She did some medical stuff to his leg. Me and Cato didn’t attack. We
just sat there, catching our breath.
The growling of the beasts, which I had decided were probably muttations, seemed to be getting louder.
I looked over the edge at them and my heart gave a jolt. I was looking directly into the eyes of someone I had come to know as a friend almost. Someone I would’ve wanted to win if me and Cato had both died.
She was there. Blond fur and eyes that looked exactly like hers, this mutt was beautiful but scary and horrifying.
And the others. Marvel, Thresh, and countless others. So many of them had died at my hand.
It was the scariest thing I’ve encountered in this arena.
The four of us, 2 and 12, stay there. Katniss shot arrows into the crowd of mutt tributes. Doglike forms of all 20 of them. All dead but brought back to life by the Capitol.
A few of them fell but there were too many. I took pleasure in the fact that they couldn’t get up to kill us.
I could do it. Push 12 in. We could win. The real star crossed lovers.
I glanced their way. Peeta was dying. Before I could do anything, a knife had lodged itself into his head. A cannon blasted.
Katniss screamed as his lifeless body fell toward the mutts. They cleared a circle around him as a hovercraft collected him. Then they resumed their position.
Katniss was miserable. She couldn’t go back home. Not after her boyfriend had died.
If we killed her, we would actually do her good.
I reached out a hand and pushed her. She didn’t even try to save herself. I could hear her screams. What a terrible way to go. But she had killed the closest people to friends I had in this arena.
The mutts finally left. Katniss was moaning feebly. I threw a knife, killing her. One last cannon blasted.
I slid down the Cornucopia, Cato right behind me.
But no trumpets. We won, yet the usual form of celebration was taking place.
I heard a voice. Claudius. Announcing that only one tribute could win.
I reached for a knife but then I realised. I can’t kill him. My hand fell to my side. I looked at him. He just stared back at me. Neither of us could kill each other.
Something that shouldn’t have ever happened had taken place here.
Something that could end my life.
I had fallen in love with another tribute.
I hated the Capitol. I hated every last one of them. With the exception of my stylist, Cadmus, the only kind Capitol citizen I had met so far.
I didn’t want them to send the mutts again. Then I saw it. A small pouch lying near where Katniss had fallen. I picked it up and opened it. Berries.
“Nightlock.” I whispered. Cato nodded. It grew everywhere in district 2.
“Don’t-.” He started to say but I cut in.
“Trust me.” I handed him a berry, and held one myself, tossing the rest aside. “On three?”
Cato nodded again. “One… two… three.”
“STOP!” I dropped the berry. So did Cato. “And I present the district 2 victors for the 74th annual hunger games!”
I grinned at Cato. He grinned back. The real star crossed lovers. Caesar Flickerman and the Capitol will love it.
